i am working from home today because my Mac pro (trashcan) would keep cashing in me when working on a specific project. i suspects it’s due to the gpu defect I’ve had repaired twice and is starting to reappear.
while working at home on my Mac book pro the cpu load goes to 700% (just on chrome mind you) then the screen goes black, the fans go to full speed for a minute and then it shuts down and refuses to start.
this will be my 3rd and then 4th major mac repairs this year.
bad luck? all my coworkers trashcan macs had the same ggpu problem. oh also my “e” key sticks.
what happened to you Apple? my Dell xeon workstation from 2011 is still alive and kicking ass.

solution - ditch crapple... their hardware is not what it used to be. they’ve sacrificed thermals and performance for sleek and thin. windows workstations are much more expandable and reliable... and they actually get updated every 2 years instead of 5!

Sounds like you got a lemon and it’s time for them to replace it at NC.

I’ve never had an Apple product and never will. They are one of the few companies I absolutely refuse to support.
Hopefully the next repair works out.

Fortunately it looks like they are repenting of that with their new products. The trashcan Mac Pro was soundly—trashed—by pros, even though it was beautiful. The new Mac Pro is much more a box built for pro use.
Now that Johnny Ive has left, there has been speculation that the industrial part of industrial design will start getting more emphasis.

Sounds like you have a lemon on your hands. Even though Apple hardware isn’t as head and shoulders above the competition in the way it used to be in days of yore, it’s still generally reliable stuff. For all that machine cost, I’d probably be on the phone to Apple pressuring them to do something about it.

Apple’s modern stuff is all engineered obsolescence whereas the old stuff was overbuilt. Hell, I have an iPad 2 (I think that’s its generation) which works marvelously. However, last night I tried to load up the Hulu app and it required an update. I then tried to update the app and it refused, because the iOS on it is too old. I then tried to update the iOS, but it couldn’t find an update, largely because APPL decided to stop supporting it.

There’s a known bug that’s causing Chrome to crash Mac Pros.

Apple computers in a work environment are just an excuse for graphic designers to take a brainstorming hackey sack break while the IT team stands around scratching their heads.
It’s a feature, not a bug!

They used to be so amazing on the reliability and design on hardware. I’ve always used thinkpad laptops and since their quality has gone down the last couple years I looked at buying a macbook pro instead earlier this year. I typed on that slim keyboard and hated it - also the damn touch bar is gimmicky as hell.
They seem a bit lost direction-wise these last few years and it’s showing.

What you describe sounds deeply frustrating.
My brother is a dyed-in-the-wool Mac guy. (You know him as Ttyymmnn...) I’m dyed-in-the-wool Windows. Apple stuff always seems to me like it’s locked in a black box at the bottom of a deep lake. I can’t even copy a file from, or to, an Apple device. But Ttyymmnn does a lot of work in a software called Finale , typesetting musical scores. He’s quite expert at it. And Mac is the only show in town for Finale . I assume the project you refer to is having to do with video, and there, too, lies one of Mac’s great strengths.
So frustrating. I feelz.

I’ve gotten used to the touchbar and I actually prefer their keyboard, but their QC has been extremely poor as of late...so say nothing of the fact that they have annoying major things for minor design gains. “guys, we can make the whole thing 2mm slimmer but it means everyone’s greasy residue from typing will imprint all over the glossy screen and be massively annoying to use the screen or clean it up ....lets got for it!”

originally we had camera’s that only shot in cinema DNG or Prores. Since Cinema DNG sucks balls, prores it was. Thankfully they’ve updated to a new, VASTLY superior raw codec so quicktime isn’t as critical, though alot of our footage is still archived as prores.

I’m going to try and keep my 2010 Macbook Pro running forever. This thing is tough as nails and has outlasted everything else I’ve owned despite being abused. My wife has a brand new one and it seems very fragile.

The old stuff was solid. Built like a tank and had great performance. The new stuff is like a German car - nothing better...when its working.

I’m still rocking my 2011 i7 MBP. It’s rock solid. I have two issues. 1) I can’t upgrade to Mojave and 2) it’s a ticking time bomb before the GPU self destructs again (fixed by apple a few years back). So disappointed that the replacement logic board didn’t include an improved GPU, only the stock one ready to fail again... someday...

I was gonna be like, Yeah, and cost you five grand. Turns out that won’t even cover the cost of the monitor.
Which begs the question: Is anybody going to be looking at your work using anything even half as good for a display?

My nephew has been saving to get an older used macbook for video editing. I keep trying to tell him a desktop would be a much better use of 700$ in terms of performance but he’s kind of brainwashed into the apple life. Anything is an upgrade from the macbook he uses now, I just feel like getting another old macbook for 700 vs building a budget desktop the desktop makes more sense for his application.

don't get me wrong, when this thing is running it kills it for editing. it's a base model (even though we ordered loaded) and it's easily as fast as my loaded trashcan. that's mostly due to the new processors though so it's not like getting a used model really matters.

Do you use any fan control software? Macs Fan Control has always been an essential application for me. It won't solve buggy hardware or software but it can get ahead of out of control thermals. Most of the time you can keep it programed where the fans are inaudible but far more effective.
